What to do when the key breaks inside a lock?
It is so frustrating! We know.. Here are some tips that will help you know what to do when the key breaks inside the lock.
Professional locksmiths often use narrow, barbed tools that are specifically designed for raking out keys, but the blade of a scroll saw or jig saw can also be used. When your key breaks in the lock, your first instinct should be to call a locksmith, but if for some reasons you cannot find a locksmith, the following steps can be used to remove the broken key inside your lock;
- Spray lubricating oil into the keyhole to loosen the lock. Position the straw attachment of the spray nozzle at the lock’s mouth. Then you will spray the lubricant in order to let the key slide easily and it will also help to prevent your lock from corroding as a result of its water resistant feature. Some examples of lubricating oils that can be used for this process include silicone spray and graphite powder.
- Check to see how much of the key is in the lock. If the key broke in the middle and the part with you has some of the key cuts, the lock is probably still aligned. But if the cylinder is no more aligned, you will need to align it. The cylinder will have to be in a locked or unlocked position for you to be able to remove the key fragment in the lock. You can use the needle nose pliers to reach inside the cylinder until the cylinder is aligned.
- Choose your extractor tool. There are a lot of tools that can be used as an extractor tool, some of them include, scroll saw, jig saw, tweezers, bobby pin, paper clip, safety pin, Swiss army knife, key hooks, and needle nosed pliers. Put the tip of the needle nose pliers inside the keyhole, and then try to grip the broken key and pull it out. This technique is best suited for when the key is broken at its head and all the cuts are inside the lock. But if you cannot remove the key, pull the pliers out and use another extractor tool.
- Insert the blade of a scroll saw or jig saw in the keyhole with the teeth pointing downward. Push and twist it inside the keyhole until you feel the teeth of the blade grip one of the cuts on the key. Then, pull the blade out of the keyhole and the broken key will follow it.
